...San Francisco

Voici un voyage que j'ai fait en mai-juin 2016. J'ai tout simplement réalisé mon plus grand rêve d'enfance en allant visiter la ville de San Francisco. Alors même si je n'avais à ce moment là que mon smartphone pour prendre des photos (quel dommage), et que ce voyage a eu lieu plusieurs mois avant la publication de ce blog, je pense qu'il y a sa place. Difficile de faire un choix parmi presque 900 photos, ce voyage aurait mérité un blog à lui tout seul, tellement la ville est photogénique !

Here's a trip I did in may-june 2016. I just fulfilled my biggest childhood dream by visiting the city of San Francisco. Despite the fact that I only had my smartphone to take pictures at this time (what a pity), and that I did this trip several months before publishing this blog, I think it's fair to talk about it. It's been difficult to sort out nearly 900 pictures, and the city is so photogenic that this travel could deserve a whole blog !

Je me suis rendu seul aux États-Unis, et j'ai passé la majeure partie de mon séjour à San Francisco seul. Mais j'ai aussi rencontré là-bas ma correspondante Mary, avec qui j'échangeais déjà via internet depuis un an et demi, et qui habite près de San Francisco.

I went to the USA on my own and spent most of my stay in San Francisco on my own. But I also met my penpal Mary, who I had been in touch with for one and a half year through the internet, and who lives not far from San Francisco.

Le nord / The North

Comme vous allez le voir, là-bas le fameux Golden Gate bridge a passé son temps à jouer à cache-cache avec moi. Il faut dire qu'il est près d'un tiers de l'année dans la brume. J'ai eu la chance de le traverser en décapotable dès mon arrivée !

As you will notice, The famous Golden Gate Bridge kept on playing hide-and-seek with me. Indeed, it's in the fog nearly a third of the year. I had the chance to cross it by convertible car as soon as I arrived !

De l'autre côté du pont se trouve la jolie petite ville de Sausalito. Tout au fond de la photo, on aperçoit le ban de brume qui entre dans la baie, et la ville de San Francisco en dessous.

On the other side of the bridge lays the cute town of Sausalito. On the background of the picture below, you can see the mist entering the bay, and the city of San Francisco beneath it.

La photo ci-dessous est prise depuis le pied du Golden Gate Bridge près de Fort Point. L'entrée de la baie est étroite, et c'est le choc thermique entre l'océan Pacifique et la baie qui provoque le brouillard qui cache bien souvent le pont. La ville est au soleil et il y fait bon, tandis qu'il fait vraiment frais à l'endroit d'où je prend la photo.

The next picture was taken from the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, near Fort Point. The entrance of the bay is very narrow, and the fog that often hides the bridge is due to the thermal shock between the Pacific Ocean and the bay. The city is under the sun and it's warm there, whereas it's really chilly at the place where I stand to take the picture.

Prenons un peu de hauteur pour nous retrouver au-dessus de Crissy Field, un ancien terrain d'aviation militaire (on voit les hangars au premier plan).

Let's get up high a little bit above Crissy Field, which is a former military air field (you can see the hangars on the foreground).

Ci-dessous, regardez bien au au milieu de la photo, au dessus des nuages, vous le voyez ? On aperçoit la pile sud du Golden Gate Bridge. Ce n'est pas encore aujourd'hui que je le verrai clairement...

Below, look in the centre of the picture, above the clouds, do you see it ? You can see the South Pillar of the Golden Gate Bridge. I won't see it clearly today...

Marina District

Le Palace of Fine Arts fut construit en 1915 pour l'exposition internationale Panama-Pacifique.

The Palace of Fine Arts was built in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition.

Et la Marina, port de plaisance non loin du Palace of Fine Arts.

And the Marina, a pleasure boat harbour close to the Palace of Fine Arts.

Fisherman's wharf

Voici le Pier 39 (la jetée 39 si vous préférez) au nord-est de la ville, où des dizaines d'otaries s'entassent sur les pontons pour se sécher et se réchauffer au soleil dans un joyeux concert. Ces animaux sont protégés et toute activité humaine est interdite sur les pontons tant que les otaries souhaitent y rester !

Here's the Pier 39 in the North-East of the city, where dozens of sea lions pile up on the decks to dry and warm under the sun in a merry concert ! Those animals are protected and all human activities are banned on the decks as long as they wish to stay there !

Le Pier 39 est LE lieu où vous trouverez vos souvenirs ! De nombreuses boutiques et restaurants le jalonnent. Mais attention, tout est cher !

The Pier 39 is THE place where you may find souvenirs ! Theres' a lot of boutiques and restaurants. But beware the prices !

Downtown

J'ai trouvé un hôtel pas très cher sur California Street, très bien situé, avec en plus le Cable Car qui passe devant. Les transports urbains en tous genres sont fréquents et quadrillent bien la ville. Entre les bus, cable cars, et autres historic streetcars, on se rend très facilement d'un point à un autre. En plus, la ville étant découpées en rues parallèles et perpendiculaires, il est facile de retrouver son chemin. En revanche, on peut être dans la rue de son hôtel tout en étant à plusieurs kilomètres de son hôtel (California Street est longue de plus de 8 km par exemple) !

I found a pretty cheap hotel on California Street, well situated, with the Cable Car passing by. Urban public transportations of all kinds are available and can take you anywhere in the city. By bus, cable car, historic streetcar, you can go easily from one point to another. In addition, the streets being mostly parallel and perpendicular, it's easy to find your way. Yet, you can be in the very street of your hotel and several miles from your hotel at the same time (For example California Street is more than 5 mile long) !

Un Historic Streetcar sur Embarcadero. Il en existe de toutes les couleurs et je les ai trouvés vraiment sympatiques et confortables. Pour demander l'arrêt il faut tirer sur la ficelle qui court le long de la rame, ça n'a pas changé depuis la mise en service.

A Historic Streetcar on Embarcadero. They exist in every colors and I found them really nice and comfortable. To ask for a stop, you have to pull the rope that runs along the car, it didn't change since the entry into service.

Le Ferry Building était la gare des ferries. Depuis le début des années 2000 c'est devenu une galerie commerçante abritant restaurants et boutiques dédiées à la gastronomie.

The Ferry Building was the terminal for ferries. In the early 2000's it became a shopping centre with restaurants and gastronomy shops.

Financial District

C'est le quartier des affaires, également très touristique, situé au nord-est de la ville, et donnant donc sur l'est de la baie de San Francisco

It's the business area, with a lot of tourists as well, situated in the North-East of the city, looking onto the East of the San Francisco Bay.

Le Bay Bridge relie San Francisco à Oakland, en traversant Treasure Island (L'île au trésor). On y circule sur deux niveaux, et on ne peut pas traverser le pont à pied, contrairement au Golden Gate Bridge. Par contre, étant situé plus à l'intérieur de la baie, il est plus souvent visible que son homologue rouge de l'entrée de la baie.

The Bay Bridge connects San Francisco to Oakland through Treasure Island. The traffic is on two levels, and you can't cross the bridge by foot, unlike the Golden Gate Bridge. Yet, situated further inside the bay, it's more often visible than it's red counterpart from the entrance of the bay.

Deux architectures pour deux époques ! Devant, le Sentinel Building du début du XXème siècle, qui abrite American Zoetrope, la maison de Production de Francis Ford Coppola. Derrière, la pyramide Transamerica du début des années 1970, immeuble d'affaires et plus haute tour de la ville.

Behind, the Transamerica Pyramid from the beginning of the 1970's, a business building, and the highest tower of the city.

Nob Hill - Russian Hill

Les quartiers de Nob Hill et Russian Hill sont connus pour les fameuses rues en pente.
La photo ci-dessous en montre un exemple. Il n'y a qu'une fois que l'on s'y trouve vraiment que l'on se rend compte de la raideur des rues, inattendue dans une grande ville comme San Francisco !

The Nob Hill and Russian Hill neighborhoods are renowned for their famous steep streets.
The below picture shows an example of it. It's only when you're actually there that you realize how unexpetedly steep those streets are.

Essayez de trouver Macondray Lane, dans Russian Hill, un charmant petit chemin fleuri et arboré. Au bout de celui-ci, la récompense de cette vue sur Telegraph Hill et la Coit Tower (que l'on voit de beaucoup d'endroits dans la ville). C'est ici qu'a été tournée la série Les Chroniques de San Francisco.

Try to find Macondray Lane in Russian Hill, a nice little path full of flowers and trees. At the end of it, the reward of this view on Telegraph Hill and the Coit Tower (which you can see from many places in the city). This is the place where the TV series San Francisco Chronicles was shot.

Toujours dans Russian Hill, l'Ina Coolbrith Park, tout petit parc mais à fort dénivelé ! En haut des escaliers, on peut admirer un panorama allant de Telegraph Hill au Financial District

Still in Russian Hill, the little but steep Ina Coolbrith Park. Over the stairway, you can admire a panorama covering Telegraph Hill to Financial District.

La Coit Tower (je ne suis pour rien dans le nom) est haute d'une soixantaine de mètres et est située au sommet de Telegraph Hill. On peut monter à son sommet. A l'intérieur, en bas, les murs sont recouverts de peintures représentant des scènes de la vie américaine du début du XXème siècle. L'entrée en bas est gratuite mais il faut payer pour monter au sommet de la tour. Je n'y suis pas allé, j'ai trop le vertige !

The Coit Tower is about 200 ft high and stands over Telegraph Hill. One can climb over the top of the tower. At the bottom, inside, the walls are covered with paintings showing scenes of american life in the early 20th century. The entry is free, but you have to pay to climb the tower. I didn't, I suffer from fear of height.

Retour à Russian Hill. Lombard Street est cette célèbre rue en zigzag (en fait seule une portion sur un pâté de maisons de cette longue rue est en zigzag). La rue était tellement raide que les riverains, excédés de retrouver des véhicules accidentés contre leurs maisons ont fait aménager cette partie qui oblige les véhicules à ralentir.

Back to Russian Hill. Lombard Street is this famous zigzag street (in fact, only a portion the length of a block is a zigzag). The street was so steep that the dwellers, sick of having vehicles crashed in their houses, had this part of the street arranged that way.

Civic Center - NoPa - Haight

Le City Hall (l'hôtel de ville de San Francisco), au coeur de Civic Center.

NoPa

Il parait que les fameuses Painted Ladies (les dames peintes), les maisons colorées de style victorien du quartier de NoPa, ont été achetées une bouchée de pain dans les années 60 par des hippies, restaurées et repeintes dans ces jolies couleurs pastel. Elles valent aujourd'hui une fortune. Ci-dessous les plus connues, qui bordent Alamo Square Park. Depuis le parc, le centre-ville est visible derrière les maisons (voir dans l'album).

I've heard that the famous Painted Ladies, the colorful victorian houses in NoPa, were bought for next to nothing by the Hippies in the 1960's, restored and painted in these pretty pastel colors. Nowadays they cost a fortune ! Below, the most famous, lining Alamo Square Park. From the Park you can see Downtown beyond the houses (see the album).

Haight

Attention, ce panneau indique que nous sommes au coeur du quartier hippie de San Francisco, Haight Ashbury ! Sur Haight Street, plein de boutiques de culture hippies, des disquaires, et quelques hippies !

Warning, This road sign indicates that we are in the heart of the hippie neighborhood of San Francisco, Haight Ashbury ! On Haight street there's plenty of hippie culture boutiques, record shops, and some Hippies !!!

La preuve avec ces trois photos : La maison brune était celle du groupe Greatful Dead, la rose, celle de Janis Joplin. Les deux sont sur Ashbury Street. La troisième est sur Haight Street et a hébergé Jimi Hendrix.

As proof these three pictures : The brown house used to be the Greatful Dead's house, the pink one was Janis Joplin's. Both are on Ashbury Street. The third one, on Haight Street sheltered Jimi Hendrix.

Golden Gate Park

En plus du Golden Gate Bridge, il y a le Golden Gate Park, un immense parc d'environ 5 km de long sur 800m de large. A l'intérieur, entre autres, un jardin botanique, un jardin japonais, le Conservatory of Flowers (Conservatoire des fleurs, photo suivante), l'académie des sciences de Californie, des plans d'eau dont l'un entoure une île. J'ai loué un vélo pour le visiter, mais tous les chemins ne sont pas autorisés aux vélos.

Besides the Golden Gate Bridge, there's the Golden Gate Park, a huge park about 3.1 mile long and 2600 ft wide. It features, among others, a botanical garden, a japanese garden, the Conservatory of Flowers (next picture), the California Academy of Sciences, lakes, including one that surrounds an island. I rented a bicycle to visit it, but bicycles are not allowed on all of the paths.

Une soirée à Chinatown puis à North Beach / An evening in Chinatown and North beach

Vous voulez bien manger, en quantité et pour pas cher ? Chinatown est pour vous ! J'ai passé cette soirée avec Mary et elle m'a emmené dans un restaurant où nous n'avons pas réussi à venir à bout de nos plats. Nous nous sommes partagés les restes pour ramener, elle chez elle, moi à mon hôtel où j'avais un micro-ondes !

Do you want to eat well, a lot, and for a good price ? Chinatown is for you ! I spent this evening with Mary who brought me to a chinese restaurant where we didn't manage to finish our dishes. We shared the leftovers and took them away, Mary to her home, me to my hotel where I had a microwave oven !

Après le restaurant chinois, direction Embarcadero. Voir le Bay Bridge de nuit est un superbe spectacle. Des milliers de lumières sont installées sur ses câbles et forment des motifs qui changent sans cesse, représentant nuages, et autres volutes. Ce soir là nous avons pris un verre sur la terrasse d'un restaurant d'Embarcadero, avec vue sur le Bay Bridge, ma-gni-fique (Voir l'album).

After Chinatown we headed to Embarcadero. Gazing at the Bay Bridge by night is a breathtaking show ! Thousands of lights are hung on its cables and form everchanging motives, representing clouds and whisps. That night we had a glass on the terrace of a steakhouse on Embarcadero which has a magnificent view on the Bay Bridge (see the album).

Retour au Nord / Return to the North

Pour essayer de voir notre fameux pont ! La fin du séjour approche.

Mission

Plus au sud, Mission Dolores est le plus ancien bâtiment de la ville, construit à la fin du XVIIIème siècle.

Further in the South, Mission Dolores is the oldest building of the city, erected at the end of the 18th century.

Allons à la plage ! / Let's go to the beach !

La première est Ocean Beach, une immense plage à l'ouest de la ville où l'on peut regarder les surfers exercer leur art sur les vagues du Pacifique.

The first one, Ocean Beach, is a very long beach in the West of the city, where you can see surfers practicing their art on the Pacific waves.

La seconde, plus petite et plus au nord, est Baker Beach, d'où l'on aperçoit le pied du Golden Gate Bridge (de l'autre côté cette fois), qui a remis son manteau. Il faut dire qu'il ne fait pas bien chaud !

The second one, smaller, situated in the North, is Baker Beach, from which you can see the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, that is wearing its fog coat. The fact is that it's not warm here !

Sur l'eau / Afloat

Partons en croisière sur la baie de San Francisco ! Un tour d'une heure en bateau vaut vraiment la peine ! On démarre du Pier 39, pour passer sous le Golden Gate Bridge. Puis en revenant on va tourner autour d'Alcatraz, avant de retourner au Pier 39.

Let's go for a cruise in the San Francisco Bay ! A one hour boat trip is really worth experiencing ! After departing from the Pier 39 you sail under the Golden Gate Bridge. On the return the boat turns around Alcatraz before going back to the Pier 39.

Le voilà enfin visible ! 2700 mètres d'acier ! Il aura fallu passer dessus, aller à ses pieds, prendre de la hauteur et finalement passer en dessous pour voir au moins une de ses piles complètement sortie du brouillard (la pile nord) ! A cet endroit j'ai aussi vu mes premiers dauphins dans leur milieu naturel, impossible à prendre en photo tellement ils sortent et rentrent vite dans l'eau.

Eventually I see it !!! 2700 meters of steel ! I had to cross it by car, go to its foot, climb hills and finally sail beneath it to see at least one of its towers completely out of the myst (the north tower) ! At this place I aslo saw my first dolphins in their natural environment. They were so fast that I was unable to take a picture of them !

By night

Et c'est déjà la dernière soirée... Mary m'a emmené au Cheese Cake Factory (je pensais que ce restaurant n'existait que dans Big Bang Theory), au sommet de l'immeuble de Macy's, sur Union Square. La photo ci-dessous montre le Westin St Francis, un grand hôtel de luxe pris depuis la terrasse du Cheese Cake Factory. Union Square est un peu l'équivalent de la place Vendôme en terme de magasins !

Already my last evening there... Mary took me to the Cheese Cake Factory (I thought this restaurant existed only in the Big Bang Theory !), over the top of Macy's building, on Union Square. The below picture shows the Westin St Francis, a big fancy hotel, shot from the Cheese Cake Factory's terrace. Union Square is a little bit the counterpart of the Place Vendôme in Paris, regarding some of its luxury shops !

Cette page est loin d'être exhaustive et j'ai du faire un tri parmi tout ce que j'ai vu à San Francisco, et condenser mes commentaires par rapport à tout ce qu'il y a à dire. Il y a dans l'album associé des photos d'autres endroits que j'ai visités, tels le Buena Vista Park (une butte depuis laquelle on voit notamment... le Golden Gate Bridge), le parc du Preisidio, la Grace Cathedral, les autres Piers sur Embarcadero, la maison de Frank Bullitt dans le film avec Steve McQueen et Jacqueline Bisset, les jolies maisons colorées le long de la Marina, etc, etc, etc... J'ai ADORÉ ce voyage !

Pour finir, un énorme MERCI à Mary pour son accueil, sa gentillesse, les balades en décapotable (Passage sur le Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito au nord, au delà de Pacifica au sud et le restaurant au bord du Pacifique avec l'otarie qui attendait patiemment qu'un pêcheur attrape un poisson pour lui piquer !), les bons restaurants (oui on mange aussi très bien en Californie !), et sa générosité !

This page is far from being exhaustive and I had to pick and choose among everything I saw in San Francisco, and abridge my comments in regards to all that's to be said. In the associated album you'll find extra pictures of other places I visited, like Buena Vista Park (a hill whence you can see in particular... the Golden Gate Bridge), the Presidio Park, the Grace Cathedral, the other piers on Embarcadero, Frank Bullitt's house from the movie starring Steve McQueen and Jacqueline Bisset, the cute colorful houses along the Marina, etc, etc, etc... I LOVED this travel !

Last but not least, I want to say an enormous THANK YOU to Mary for her welcoming, her kindness, the tours in convertible car (on the Golden Gate Bridge, to Sausalito in the North, beyond Pacifica in the South and the restaurant by the Pacific, with this cute sea lion, patiently waiting for a fish to bite the angler's line to steal it !), the good restaurants (one can eat very well in California !), and her generosity ! Cheers !
